Baseliner

A realtime, in-situ wireless monitoring technology sending data directly from the field to the internet for seamless integration and analysis.

Baseliner is a low cost wireless sensor network designed for rugged, resource-constrained outdoor environments. The platform can interface to almost any sensor, sending data directly from the field to the internet via 3G, 4G, LTE or satellite.

We work with scientists and domain experts to develop sensor characterisation and calibration instrumentation to ensure the data meets the accuracy requirements.

We also work with field operators to install and maintain the system, and when appropriate, IT to integrate the data into existing workflows. Baseliner opens up crucial data collection to inform a range of conservation, restoration and basic infrastructure projects.

Overview

Baseliner comprises of an array of sensors attached to a sensor station. The sensor station takes a reading at a predetermined frequency, and sends the data via a LoRa wireless network to a communications gateway. Depending on the available communications, the gateway send the data, along with system diagnostics to a database on the internet via 3G, 4G, LTE or satellite. Once on the internet, the data can then be accessed via a web dashboard or API for integration into 3rd party applications.

Applications

Monitoring Soil to Indicate Ecosystem Health

By measuring and tracking soil properties such as soil moisture, temperature, pH, EC and Co2 over the long term, ecologists can use soil health as an indicator of overall ecosystem health, helping to assess the effectiveness of soil restoration practises. Baseliner Soil has been developed in collaboration with soil scientists from Monash University’s ‘School of Earth Atmosphere and Environment and conservation non profit organisation Bush Heritage Australia

Ground-Truthing Climate Reanalysis Data

Setting up low cost meteorological observation networks in areas with little to no coverage complements the coverage of existing weather stations. This allows climate scientists, risk analysts and insurers to integrate additional on-the-ground data into existing reanalysis models, adding data resolution and leading to better understandings of the frequency, impact and interrelation of extreme weather events.

Flood Risk Warning Systems

Low cost hydro meteorological stations in resource constrained areas can help mitigate flood risks by providing data to better understand climate patterns affecting the dynamics and extent of floodplains and wetlands, informing flood responses and guiding investment.

Water and Septage Truck Monitoring

Monitoring the water level of water storage tanks can help potable water trucks plan refill routes, enhancing service efficiency and avoiding water shortages. GPS tracking and liquid level monitoring of septage trucks can help prevent illegal dumping.
