Baseliner: A Deep Dive into Wireless Sensor Networks for Conservation

Sunday June 15, Pre Congress Workshop at ICCB 2025

Join us for this hands-on deep dive into deploying and maintaining in situ wireless sensor networks for environmental monitoring and verification of conservation and restoration projects at scale.

As climate patterns become more unpredictable, WSNs facilitate the collection of large datasets over extended periods, offering insights into short and long-term ecological changes and trends, and ground-truthing data that informs models, policy and land management practices.

To date WSNs have been notoriously difficult and expensive to deploy and maintain in environments where there is little to no power or communications infrastructure. Deploying and maintaining WSNs often requires technical expertise and expensive equipment, making them inaccessible to many researchers and conservationists. Additionally, many WSNs are not designed for conservation where needs are different from other industries such as agriculture monitoring where deployments tend to be short term and targeted for optimising yield.

Recent advancements in technology have made in situ wireless sensor networks much more accessible and affordable. That means real-time, in-situ 24 hour monitoring of landscapes and ecology at scale is becoming a reality, enabling land managers, ecologists and conservationists to collect continuous, high-resolution data over months and years.

    Workshop Details

Baseliner is a wireless sensor network (WSN) system designed specifically for rugged and remote environmental monitoring and verification of conservation and ecological restoration projects at scale.

In this hands-on, pre congress workshop, we’ll discuss case studies and applications for WSNs, and use Baseliner to demystify the process of deploying and maintaining WSNs in rugged and remote environments.

    The workshop will cover:

    • Case studies of deployments for conservation applications including what worked and lessons learnt
    • How to scope, deploy and maintain a WSN including
      • Defining the application and scope
      • Sensors and the kind of data you can collect
      • Communication protocols and when to use each one
      • Equipment required including gateways, types of antennas and sensor stations
      • Designing the layout and placement for gateways and sensor stations
      • Deployment and running costs
    • Hands on programming and setting up of a sensor station transmitting to a gateway and then internet.

By the end of this practical, application-based workshop, attendees should understand the basic concepts of setting up and collecting data through an WSN as well as understanding of the key considerations for designing, installing and maintaining a wireless sensor network.

    Who Should Attend?

Conservation practitioners, ecologists, researchers, restoration specialists, land managers, and anyone looking to harness the power of environmental data. Spaces are limited.
